This week’s reading- Acts 5-6

It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. Isaiah 55:11

As we read chapters 5 and 6 of Acts, it seems as though the honeymoon period is already over for the church. Discord and division has begun: We see Ananias and Sapphira’s sobering judgement for lying and a dispute over the widows’ food distribution. Satan is attempting to divide the early church at its onset, but the way that the apostles handled these events caused the “word of God spread and the number of disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem.” Acts 6:7
Let’s take a moment to look further into the account of the widows’ food distribution. “The Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.” Acts 6:2. In those days the widows would be cared for by the synagogue, as in keeping with the law of Moses. This duty was left to the church probably because the Jewish leaders saw the widows who were now disciples of Jesus as outcasts. More division is found inside the church. Hebraic Jews were traditionalists from Jerusalem and spoke Aramaic while the Hellenistic Jews were from the Roman Empire and spoke Greek. The traditional Jews thought the Greek Jews embraced Greek culture and saw them as unspiritual. Hence the unfair treatment in the distribution of food. The solution to this problem was brilliant. The apostles appointed 7 people to oversee the widows food distribution, but all these seven men had Greek names. The widows that were being discriminated against were being cared for by their own which sought to bridge the divide between these two camps of believers. “So the word of God spread.” Acts 6:7.

We know that division in the church is nothing new, but it does distract us from our mission to spread God’s word. Which kind of Christian/group do you feel like you are better than? If Satan can’t tempt us into bad behavior, he can most likely tempt us to think that we are better than others. We like to walk a little taller and feel superior. Take a moment, if you are ready, to ask for forgiveness.

Prayer

It starts with me, Lord.
I admit today that I feel superior to _____.
I repent and ask that you would change my heart.
By the power of your Holy Spirit help me to grow in love for them.
In Jesus Name.
