This week’s reading- Acts 13-14
There was a lot in our reading this week for me to choose from to focus on. The exploits of Paul and Barnabas are filled with action, tension, power-plays and drama, but I chose something different. Somewhat hidden in the accounts is a statement that Paul made in his talk at the synagogue in Antioch. He was teaching the Jews about their history and building the case for Jesus being the long-awaited Messiah. Paul said, “…for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died…” Acts 13:36 (NLT) Another translation says, “For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep…” Acts 13:36 (NASB)
This simple statement really challenges me. All of us have lives to live, and we have a choice of whether we invest the time we have wisely or spend it less deliberately. As I get older, I realize more and more how precious and valuable life is, and the potential each one of us has. This side of eternity we have the amazing privilege to show and share the love of God to everyone around us. Perfectly? Nope! But we can live in a way that allows others see us grow and mature in our relationship with God through the way we relate to people and our circumstances, learning to take full advantage of the opportunities that God brings our way. Even our screw ups can be used to help show people what it really looks like to follow Jesus and live our lives for Him. Few of us will be famous, but all of us can be impact players in our own circles of influence. King David was by no means perfect, but the overall impact of his life was very powerful. You and I have the same potential. We can live for Christ right now and be a light for all around us to see, “…let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:16 (NLT)
What was said of David is within our reach to be said of us. For me, I pray that God will help me stay focused, so at the end of my earthly life He will say that I “did the will of God in my own generation” and fulfilled the purpose He had for me.
