This week’s reading- Colossians 4:10, Acts 12:25, Acts 13:1-13, Acts 15:36-41, Philemon 24, 2 Timothy 4:11
John Mark’s story is one of redemption. We don’t know why he deserted Paul during their missionary journey, but we do know that at some point, they reconciled, and he became a trusted friend and companion. He also wrote one of Jesus’ biographies, which bears his name (Mark).
One thought about Mark’s desertion is that he became discouraged during a particularly rough period of ministry, and that’s why he left and went home. I can understand that sentiment because ministry is not easy. It is easy to become discouraged when the demands feel like more than you can handle. Rough seasons go on for what can feel like too long. None of this is a surprise to Jesus, but it can definitely catch us off guard.
Somehow, Mark found his footing and jumped back in. I’m not sure how long his break lasted, but sometimes, stepping away for a time may be what’s needed. The important thing about Mark is that he didn’t allow a break to become a lifestyle; he re-entered and allowed himself to be used.
Encouragement is so essential for everyone. Do you have people in your life who encourage you? Are you that encouraging person to someone else?
