This week’s reading- Matthew 1:16-25, Matthew 2:13-23Luke 2:4-52Luke 3:23, Luke 4:22, John 1:45, John 6:42

Have you ever felt overlooked? We encounter many characters in the Bible, some of which are easy to overlook. In the story of Christmas, our attention is often drawn to Baby Jesus, Mary, the wise men, the angels, and King Herod—but Joseph is a figure we might unintentionally overlook.

In the New Testament, little is said about Joseph. He is mentioned only 14 times, all within the Gospels. Mark does not mention him by name, and John refers to him only twice. Both Luke and Matthew discuss Joseph, but their accounts are brief. Notably, the remaining 23 books of the New Testament are silent about him. Yet, Joseph plays a vital role in establishing Jesus’ bloodline.

“And because Joseph was a descendant of King David…” Luke 2:4b (NLT)

Joseph, being a descendant of King David, fulfills the prophecy that the Messiah would come from the seed of David. (2 Samuel 7:12–16)

This shows us that God is incredibly detailed and that everyone has a role in His divine plan. Joseph is as important as any other character in the Bible. While the Bible provides few details about Joseph’s character—and no words spoken by him are recorded—we know enough to recognize that he was a humble man who faithfully obeyed God, respected others, took responsibility, and worked diligently to provide for his family.

We can learn that God has a plan for each of us, and we all play an important role in His divine purpose. God does not overlook us. No matter how small or insignificant we may feel, He sees us and values our obedience and faithfulness.

Joseph’s life reminds us that our significance is not tied to how much attention we receive or how much is written about us but to how faithfully we fulfill God’s calling. Like Joseph, we may not be in the spotlight, but our obedience can have an eternal impact. Joseph didn’t perform miracles or deliver powerful speeches but he made crucial decisions to protect and provide for Jesus, ensuring God’s plan was carried out.

Similarly, we might feel overshadowed by others who seem more prominent or gifted, but God values every act of faithfulness, no matter how small. Joseph reminds us that roles behind the scenes are just as critical as those in the spotlight. There is no such thing as an unimportant role in God’s kingdom.

So, know that God sees you, whether your calling is parenting, serving in your church, working diligently in your community, or simply being faithful in daily tasks. Like Joseph, your role matters deeply, and your obedience contributes to His greater plan.
