This week’s reading- Acts 1-2

Sometimes we find ourselves trying to do somebody else’s job… and it’s easy to slip into this: a parent trying to get their child to do their homework better; a co-worker meddling in the work of a teammate; a spouse “hinting” at how their mate can do better; constant criticizing of public leaders with little thought to the pressures they face etc. The problem here (besides being disrespectful) is that it distracts us from being fully focused on OUR responsibilities. This isn’t a new problem, it was actually going on around Jesus during His earthly ministry, even up to the day He left for heaven: “So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” 7 He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:6–8 (NLT)

God’s job is to oversee time, space and history and He is the only one who has the capacity to do this. In His plan He has assigned us a primary job, and that is to show and tell everyone we can about His love, and His desire to forgive and adopt them into His family. He has uniquely equipped us for this by giving us His Holy Spirit for power, and His word for direction.

As the book of Acts unfolds, we will see how this works out, as well as see the obstacles that can interfere with it. Simply put, if we trust God to do His job, it will free us up to do ours which will lead us to see the amazing and life changing things He can do in, and through us!
