This week’s reading- Romans 9-10

In our reading this week we encounter some more difficult teaching from Paul, regarding God’s will and our response to Him. At first glance, some examples of God’s sovereign choices can appear to be arbitrary and unfair. Paul knew some of his readers might gravitate to this conclusion, so he added this:

“Well then, you might say, “Why does God blame people for not responding? Haven’t they simply done what he makes them do?” 20 No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?” (Romans 9:18-20 NLT)

There are some things to keep in mind here (1) God isn’t like us. He is omniscient (all knowing) omnipotent (all powerful) and He is just, and loving all at the same time. There will be things we don’t understand, but we can always be certain of His character. The ultimate proof is in the great sacrifice He made of His son, to provide salvation for all who will accept Him. (2) God already knows everything about us. For instance, He knew that Pharoah had hardened his heart toward God, so God used that to display His power. God knew what was going to happen so He used it for His purposes. (3) God wants all people to be saved, but He will not force it. “He does not want anyone to be destroyed but wants everyone to repent.”  2 Peter 3:9 (NLT) Heaven would be a miserable place for those who don’t want to bow to Him.

When we come to tough or difficult passages in the Bible, we need to remember to read them in light of other teachings we have found there. The very best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself!
