This week’s reading- 1 Samuel 13:2-3, 1 Samuel 14:1-16, 1 Samuel 18:1-5, 1 Samuel 20:1-42, 1 Samuel 23:16-18
Whenever I read about Jonathan and David’s friendship, I think of the song, “You’ve Got A Friend In Me,” the theme song of Toy Story. When Jonathan first meets David, a true bond is established right away.
“After David had finished talking with Saul, he met Jonathan, the king’s son. There was an immediate bond between them, for Jonathan loved David.” 1 Samuel 18:1 NLT
Jonathan and David were not just friends or best friends. They were brothers. When David was being chased to be murdered by King Saul, Jonathan offered to help David.
16 So Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, saying, “May the Lord destroy all your enemies!” 17 And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.” 1 Samuel 20:16-17 NLT
The friendship of David and Jonathan is an example of true biblical friendship. According to the Bible, true friendship involves loyalty, sacrifice, compromise, and emotional attachment. That is what we should learn from David and Jonathan’s friendship.
Jesus tells us: “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:35 NLT
As followers of Christ, we should aspire to be a Jonathan to someone. God will put people in our lives for the short or long term who will need us like David needed Jonathan. This can be a challenge for many since we live in a busy culture. But we must remember that God has provided us with friends like Jonathan, who encouraged us in our faith when we needed it.
THINK ABOUT THIS:
As we study Jonathan and David’s friendship, can you remember a time in your life when God provided a friend like Jonathan?
Many of us have been a David who needs a Jonathan, but have you ever been a Jonathan to someone?
Is it a challenge for you to be a Jonathan to someone, and if so, why?
As we continue our Bible Reading Plan, I would encourage you to ask God to provide you with a friend you can be a Jonathan to. We all need to be friends like Jonathan to someone.
