Annual Food Drive
August 2 - 11 | New Hope Church
For years, our valued community partner, Lorton Community Action Center, has been making a real impact by providing food to hundreds of families in our immediate community every week. Their dedication is helping our immediate community members who are facing difficulties in meeting their basic needs. We’re talking about various groups, like the elderly, working poor, military personnel, and folks from all walks of life in our community. It’s clear that our neighbors could use some support, especially with the rising costs of living. According to the Economic Research Service of the USDA, food prices have risen 25% over the last 4 years. This increase is further putting families in a tough spot, forcing them to make difficult financial decisions with limited funds.
Summers are extra challenging for families, especially those with children. Did you know that 34% of kids in Fairfax County Public Schools rely on free or reduced-price lunches? When school is out for the summer, these children have little to no access to food. That’s just not right. New Hope believes that no one should have to experience food insecurity.
That’s why we do an annual food drive. We invite you to join New Hope Church and our own Camp Whatakid in our drive, aimed at supporting families in our local community. A gift of $25 translates into nearly 13 pounds of food. This feeds an individual for half a week, and a family of four for nearly two days. This support will add to the donations of LCAC’s grocery store partners and enable them to provide food to over 200 families each week. This past year, LCAC had over 10,000 visits to their food pantry, thanks to the generosity of New Hope and other community supporters. We’ll be accepting these donations through August 11, so you have time to contribute and help those in need. Together, let’s ensure that our community stands strong and that no one has to go hungry.
