April 15: Insight Post by Rusty Coram

Wednesday Insight Post

Recently, I was talking with a friend who has some significant challenges in their life. He is serious about wanting to do what God wants in the midst of some life-dominating struggles. It reminds me of the situation God’s people were in as they followed Ezra back to rebuild Jerusalem. Outnumbered by enemies and with few resources, they set out to trust Him. Here is an entry in Ezra’s journal of the trip:
“And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.” Ezra 8:21 (NLT)
What Ezra’s people, my friend, and all of us have in common is this: along the way, we will face significant challenges and hardships that require our full attention to walk through with faith, wisdom, and courage. At times like these, fasting helps us gain and remain a God-honoring focus on what matters most and prevent unnecessary distractions. Whether our fast is from food, internet use, or something else, the idea is to help us give strong and focused attention to God and His will in a compelling way. Food is good, but there are times when limiting it is a major benefit. The principle here is given in a different context, but the idea still applies:
“I am saying this for your benefit, not to place restrictions on you. I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible.” 1 Corinthians 7:35 (NLT)
My friend has begun limiting his Internet use during certain periods of time so he can better focus on God and God’s guidance. His chosen “fast” will serve him well and is a great inspiration for me, too!
