August – Service

Service is the practice of putting love into action by meeting the needs of others. It reflects the heart of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve. Through service we learn humility, compassion, and the joy of giving ourselves for the good of others. This month we focus on service as a way of living out God’s love in everyday life.

Week of August 24- Week 34

Reading:

14What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 15Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? 17So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. James 2:14–17 (NLT)

Faith without action is empty. Service is the outward expression of faith that makes it real and alive.

Reflection Questions:

1.    What does this passage reveal about the connection between faith and works?

2.    How can service bring your faith to life?

3.    What excuses sometimes keep you from serving others?

4.    How can you use your gifts to meet the needs of others?

5.    What step of service could you take this week that would show your faith in action?

Why this matters for life today:

Everyone has gifts and abilities to share. Serving is not about doing everything but about using what we have to make a difference. When each of us serves, needs are met and people experience God’s care.

Take it Deeper:

  • Your service to others is a testimony to God’s goodness.

16In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16 (NLT)

  • Genuine love shows itself through meeting the needs of others.

17If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion–how can God’s love be in that person? 1 John 3:17 (NLT)
