August 28: Insight Post by Rachel Cleveland

Friday Insight Post
by Rachel Cleveland
We all benefit from the service of others on a regular basis. Just think through your typical day. Who made your coffee possible this morning? Who picked up your trash this week? Who taught you to read? Who stayed up all night at the hospital? Who unlocked the church before anyone arrived? Some people serve through their profession, while others volunteer their time. Either way, our lives depend on people choosing to invest in the well-being of others. Our communities would quickly unravel if people decided to stop serving. But sadly, we rarely notice service until it is absent.
Air conditioning. Electricity. Teachers. Parents. Volunteers. Military members. Ministry leaders. Meals after surgery. Prayer partners. Our lives are supported by thousands of acts of service we may never even know took place. We were created to live this way. From the very beginning, God designed humanity not simply to consume what He had made, but to cultivate it, steward it, and care for one another. Service isn't an afterthought of the Christian life, it's woven into God's design for His people.
It shouldn’t surprise us then, that scripture reminds us service is the natural overflow of our faith. As James 2:17 states, “faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” Just as a healthy tree bears fruit, our living faith is meant to produce service. We don’t serve to earn God’s love, instead, we serve because we have been fortunate enough to have experienced His love firsthand. Your act of service could look like finally finding your spot on a ministry team at church. Or meeting the needs of a neighbor on your street. Maybe it is providing a break to an exhausted parent, partner, coworker. Service can take the shape of a million different interactions.
So this week I ask you, what gifts has God given you that were never meant to stop with you? What areas of your life are you meant to share: your time, your talents, your resources? What need can you meet for someone else today so that they might experience God’s care in a new way?
