If we continue reading in Matthew 25, we see Jesus telling the people that when they do acts of service to others in need, it’s as if they are doing it for Him. Think about that for a minute. Every time you and I choose to help someone in need, Jesus sees it as if we are doing it directly for Him. That is so perspective-setting for me. Let’s take a look at Matthew 25:34-40 (NLT):
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’
Service is rarely convenient. Our lives are busy (maybe too busy), and there are many demands on our time and attention. Sometimes our ideas of service to others are left as ideas, never moving into action, because we are waiting until we have the time or the resources. But over and over in scripture, we see Jesus taking the little that people have to offer and multiplying it into something meaningful.
At New Hope, we have been purposeful in offering ways to serve both inside our church and within our community. We just wrapped up an amazing food drive that will benefit our neighbors. Next, we are focusing on our local schools and helping families in need get their children off to a good start with the upcoming school year. These drives provide opportunities to serve our community by showing them the love and care of Jesus.
What might God be calling you to do in service to others today? Sometimes it’s as simple as holding a door for someone or letting someone in front of you in line. If we open our eyes to the opportunities around us, we begin to see big and little ways to serve others.
As we focus on service this month, let’s commit to asking God daily to show us ways that we can serve Him by serving others.
