July 29: Insight Post by Rusty Coram

Wednesday Insight Post

I have a dear friend who struggles with anxiety. At times it can feel crippling. Fear of what may happen in the future and uncertainty about how others will or will not respond can become overwhelming. The truth is that we live in a broken world and there is no way to avoid all problems and pain. Left to our own insight and ability, we can try to muster up positive thoughts and feelings, but this is not the remedy we need. My anxious friend needs something more than “be positive” or “it will all work out” to get through. Psalm 91:1-2 (NLT), shows us the way... “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” This passage doesn’t say that if I trust in God I will avoid difficulty, pain and hurt - that isn’t what we should expect in this world. What it does promise is that by surrendering to God’s guidance I will be in the safest place imaginable. Following God closely will protect me from some problems, but there are times when obeying God can cause me problems like persecution and rejection. When I deliberately choose to trust God, I will discover that I am never alone or without the resources He provides to help me handle whatever comes my way. I can discover peace and rest even in the midst of circumstances that are far from peaceful or restful.
My anxious friend is a strong example to me as I watch the fight against anxiety and the regular choice to go to God, sometimes with tears and trembling, seeking the shelter and refuge He offers.
