Every day, we hear about people who have enormous wealth. Business founders, savvy investors, trust fund recipients. They have huge mansions, purchase rare items, and throw lavish parties. It is easy to observe their excesses and smugly say, “If I had what they do, I would handle it differently.” The truth is, we might or might not. The way to prepare ourselves for handling more is to be faithful in handling what we currently have. Jesus summed this up simply, “10If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. 11And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? 12And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own?” Luke 16:10–12 (NLT) For all of us who follow Jesus, all we have is to be at His disposal. Having the mentality of being a manager rather than an owner is critical. If all I have is really God’s, then my responsibility is to use it to honor and please Him. This is also my privilege. Remember, even my ability to earn money is a gift from Him. Once I grasp that all I am and have is His, then my perspective will shift. What happens is that I see myself as a pipeline of God’s resources to meet not only my needs but also the needs of others. As I am faithful in this, God will continue to provide. If, instead, I choose to be a vault instead of a pipeline, then I will not enjoy the benefits of God’s provisions as He intends, nor will I experience the joy of being His partner in bringing help and hope to others.
