Today is Memorial Day, and I want to begin by saying a heartfelt thank you and expressing my gratitude for all those who gave their all to protect the freedoms we enjoy in our country. For every family who mourns the loss of a loved one who died in service to our country, my prayer is for peace for you today. Freedom is not free, as the saying rightfully goes. As we reflect on the sacrifice of so many today, let us be grateful and pray for blessings and comfort for the families who grieve.
This week’s reading has me thinking about worrying again and how complicated worry can make things. I am also chewing on the idea that trust and worry seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. For myself, I am recognizing how my degree of worry is related to my level of trust. That may not be true for everyone, but I have been convicted of its truth for myself.
What exactly does trust mean? Merriam-Webster (n.d.) defines trust as follows:
Assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.
Even the definition of trust convicts me! Who has more character, ability, strength, and truth than our God?! Matthew 6 reminds me that God knows what I need. He knows about my needs before they even occur to me. I can trust that He will supply me with what I need, but I need to seek Him and His will first and foremost. When I align my life in accordance with His will, He promises to meet me there.
I love finding the phrase “but God” in scripture. The phrase often portrays a bleak or insurmountable situation followed by God moving in such a way that could only be attributed to Him. Let’s take a look at a few:
Joseph to his brothers after they had sold him into slavery, but God elevated him to a position of power:
20You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50:20 (NLT)
While we were still far from God, He still sent Jesus to save us:
8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (NLT)
I don’t have enough strength on my own, but God is the source of strength and hope:
26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26 (NLT)
I have so much evidence to prove that God is trustworthy, but it’s still a struggle for me at times. I’m so grateful for God’s word, which shows me that nothing is too big for Him, and that the best possible thing I can do is trust.
