When my dad passed away, my sister and I began what became a lengthy process of clearing out his home office. Our mom was in a memory care facility, so the house was now ours to manage. Dad’s office was jammed with everything you could imagine from decades of work items as a self-employed business owner. Dad seldom, if ever, threw things away and we found tons of things. Oddly we found some very valuable stock certificates in an otherwise empty folder that we were about to toss away. Many times we found valuable items in piles of other things that were no longer important. In his desire to not miss things, Dad inadvertently misplaced some important things. We can all do this and, in the process, miss what is most important. If my dad had taken the time to deliberately simplify his collecting of things, nothing important would have been misplaced.
In our reading this week we find,
Simplifying our spiritual life means that we constantly remember what is most important and then screen every decision we consider through that filter. By asking a few diagnostic questions, we can declutter our lives and become more focused and effective.
- Does this opportunity reflect me delighting in God and His purposes?
- Am I trusting Him to provide for me, or am I taking matters into my own hands out of fear that He won’t provide?
- Can I say with confidence that this choice I am making truly reflects my commitment to God?
- Am I living today knowing that as I follow Him, He will help me be successful?
When I operate by keeping my focus on God and His promises it will help me declutter my heart and mind so I can fulfill my full potential.
Let me confess that my office at home is not much more organized than my Dad’s!
