October 28: Insight Post by Rusty Coram

Wednesday Insight Post

I never liked school. Never. As an introvert who gets bored easily, classes were miserable. One day in elementary school, I devised a plan to stay home, I faked a sore throat and no voice. My mom was deeply concerned for my health, so she called our family physician, Dr. Evans, and got me in that day (it was a very different time, for sure!) I was not happy about this, but I wasn’t one to back down, so I continued faking my illness. I was super surprised when Dr. Evans examined me and declared I had laryngitis and prescribed an antibiotic. To be honest, I was both relieved and concerned. Relieved I got away with my deception, but concerned I could fake out the doctor. What if I was really sick?!
Here is a truth that is convicting and comforting: we can never fool our God. He already knows everything, so trying to fake Him out is pointless. “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.” Psalm 139:1 (NLT). Knowing this gives weight to one of our verses this week: “People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.” Proverbs 28:13 (NLT). God knows all about me and my guilt. Trying to hide it from Him is a useless endeavor and only makes things worse. Imagine having an infection and pretending not to. You need to admit it and address it. We need to confess our sin humbly and repent of it; only then can healing come.
