September 23: Insight Post by Rusty Coram

One definition of wisdom I’ve used a lot in my life is “skill for living.” Wisdom is different from knowledge. Knowledge can give facts, but wisdom is needed to effectively use those facts in real life. Another thing about skillful living for followers of Jesus is making life choices that honor God in all we do - big and little. The following passage from our Bible Reading Plan this week gives us this promise, If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. James 1:5 (NLT) God wants to help us make good decisions and guide our lives. He is never irritated at our asking - He invites us to!
But there is a caveat attached to this promise that we find in the verses that follow: 6But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.” James 1:6-8 (NLT) God isn’t willing to be one of our wisdom sources - He is to be the primary source. All too often we can find ourselves shopping for answers, looking for one that is easy and comfortable. God won’t play that game. If we are merely “opinion shopping,” it means we have divided loyalty and, in that case, God will hold off giving us direction and help. Many of us have learned the hard way that we can always find guidance that feels good, but only God’s wisdom is truly good. 10Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. 11Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. 12If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer. Proverbs 9:10–12 (NLT)
