Friday Insight Post

I recently packed for a weekend camping trip with our scout troop, buying and cooking food for 60 people. Determined not to forget a single detail, I thought through everything; after all, what would people think if I forgot the s’mores sticks? By the end of the trip, the compliments flooded in. While I was pleased with my thoroughness, I was also completely exhausted.

Reflecting on that weekend, I realized how often I carry that same mindset into my relationship with God. Too often, I hold off on asking Him for help and try to engineer solutions on my own, subtly trying to prove how well I can manage.

The Psalmist offers a better way with a simple, honest cry for help.

Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil. Psalm 119:133 (NLT)

Psalm 119:133 redirects my thoughts away from my own self-sufficiency and places them back on the One who orders my steps. It is a quiet admission that I cannot do this on my own. It means surrendering my unknown future and trusting God’s sovereignty over my plans.

The more I practice asking God for guidance, the more freedom I experience. The second half of the verse reminds us why we ask: "so I will not be overcome by evil." God sees the road ahead and knows the temptations that are waiting to trip us up. When we walk the path He sets, we can trust Him to provide everything we need. This daily dependence grounds us, guarding our hearts against pride and self-reliance.

Prayer
‘Lord, help me grow in gratitude even for the difficult circumstances You allow. Help me to stop relying on my own effort to fix everything, and teach me to cry out to You first, trusting You to guide my steps.’
