It is easy to verbalize or give mental assent to things like “I love my spouse,” but it is another matter entirely to live that truth out. Becky might need something from me where the “loving” response would require me to act very differently than my natural inclination would lead me. Our faith in Christ is very similar. I can say I love and follow Him, but the reality of this is shown in my attitudes and actions. In our first reading this week from the Old Testament book Lamentations, we are reminded of the surpassing and incomparable value of going to God for guidance and then acting on what He shows us. We need to remember that belief without behavior will never lead us to become what God has in store for us.

Take a few minutes and slowly (out loud if possible) read the passage. As you do, remind yourself of how good and gracious God is to you. Think of some specific ways He has shown His faithfulness in your life. Let this be a springboard to deliberately trusting Him today. Choose to obey Him and watch what He does in and through your life.

22The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
His mercies never cease.
23Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.
24I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance;
therefore, I will hope in him!”
25The Lord is good to those who depend on him,
to those who search for him.”
