Monday Insight Post

Welcome to September as we start a whole new spiritual practice, “Guidance,” this month! I hope you’ll dig into what He has waiting for us because this is an important one. We’re talking about Guidance in the sense that we need to be constantly seeking and discerning the direction God has for us both together as a community, as well as individually through the Holy Spirit. It is a practice that not only needs intentionality but also the humility and wisdom to follow God’s way and not our own.

One of my favorite verses in the Psalms says, Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 (NLT). This verse always makes me think about the many candles I have (at the ready!) at my house for when the power goes out. When I was little, I remember seeing my mother store candles for when the power went out. Isn’t it wonderful how that kind of wisdom can be passed down just by example? Without those candles, we are just stumbling blindly in the dark. And once the candles are lit, it’s not that we’re able to see everything clearly, but clearly enough to safely pass through. That’s a lot like what God allows us to see on our journeys. We don’t always see what’s in the next room, but we’re safe and being guided by the light we are in.

And if you think about it, the candles we light in the darkness don’t just help us safely pass through, they help our loved ones and visitors as well. Matthew 5:14-16 (NASB) says, You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. I pray we all have the wisdom to spend time in the Bible, to pray to Him throughout each day, to learn to depend on Him to guide our thoughts, our decisions, our paths, and to know that as we do so we get to help others (and shine His light!) along the way.
