This week’s reading- Ephesians 5 & 6

Some concepts in the bible appear foreign to us. For instance, have you ever considered yourself holy? My guess is most of us feel less than holy most of the time, but these verses in Ephesians 5 tell us a different story to how we may feel.

“For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:8-10 (NKJV)

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.” Ephesians 5:3 (NIV)

Walking as children of the light means that darkness is exposed in our souls. God’s light shines, and we get to know the parts of ourselves that are not yet redeemed. This can feel defeating. The enemy’s tactics work well on us, but it is a lie that sin has any power over us. As God’s holy people, we can live out that different story. We don’t try to avoid sin to become holy, we are holy, and therefore we are to live in a manner fitting for a holy person.

Ephesians 5:18 says we are to be “filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.” Being filled with the Holy Spirit is the antidote for our sin and is the power behind living like one of God’s holy people.  I am reminded this week to ask God to fill me with his Holy Spirit daily. Being filled with God’s Holy Spirit is not reserved for the most holy-looking Christians; it is a necessity to withstand all we face on this side of heaven. God wants to pour out His Holy Spirit on his people!

Let’s embrace our identity as children of the light who are holy and filled with the Spirit!

Prayer
Holy Spirit, I welcome you into this new day.
I ask that you fill every part of me so I can live as you intended me to.
I ask that you fill me so I can be aware of your presence with me today.
Thank you for your power at work in me.
In Jesus name
