This week’s reading- Exodus 12-14Matthew 26

It would be handy if there was a manual to accompany the spiritual life. In this manual, for example, if you answered YES to question B, then turn the page to find instructions in section 3. The spiritual life is far less prescriptive; it trains us to be wholly dependent on God.

In Exodus 14, God’s relationship with Moses and the Israelites shows us how God requires different actions from us according to His purpose.

  1. Sometimes it’s time to cry out to God for help.

The Israelites were naturally fearful for their lives when they saw the Egyptians pursuing them, and there was nothing to do but to cry out to God for His mighty hand to deliver them.

“And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to the LORD. Then they said to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?” Exodus 14: 10-11

  1. Sometimes it’s time to wait on God.

God is in control, and He knows every detail of our story. He will fight for us; we just need to let Him.

“And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”Exodus 14: 13-14

  1. Sometimes it’s time to act.

God will show us what to do, and He will tell us when to act. We can hear directions through prayer, other people, and scriptures- we can trust God.

“And the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.”’ Exodus 14: 15-16

As we trust God with every trial, we stretch our spiritual muscles, growing in discernment. The end result builds something more beautiful than a life manual ever could. We come to know God more and experience His love for us.
