Wednesday Reflection

Humility Before God Opens Doors: The Centurion expressed deep humility, saying he was not worthy for Jesus to enter his home. His humble approach shows us that humility invites God’s grace into our lives.

Wednesday Verse

In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 1 Peter 5:5-6 (NLT)

Wednesday Questions

Am I approaching God with a humble heart, recognizing my need for His grace? How can I practice greater humility in my relationship with Jesus?

Living in a land that is “occupied” by a foreign country is tough, and Israel was in this situation with Rome. The Roman occupying forces were in full control and would not tolerate dissent. The Jews were able to maintain their religious distinctions (worship, food laws, etc.) as long as nothing interfered with them being subject to Roman law and rule. Needless to say, Roman military officers like the Centurion were not generally welcomed. The one in this episode of Jesus’ life is unusual for two reasons. First, he was viewed as an asset to the community, so much so that the Jewish leaders came to Jesus on his behalf saying, “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said, “for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.” (Luke 7:4-5)

This officer was working to build relationships in a tough environment and had succeeded in a major way. This is the picture of real leadership, where power is used for everyone’s good, not just the leader’s.

The second reason this Centurion stood out is his humble trust in Jesus. There was no power play, bribe, or threat, just a humble request for God’s favor. The officer’s attitude was so unusual that Jesus “was amazed” (Luke 7:9).

Humility is, unfortunately, a rare commodity, even among those who claim to follow Jesus. Pride, entitlement, and arrogance easily seep into our hearts and minds, corrupting even our otherwise good intentions. Not so with this non-Jew Roman soldier. We don’t know how he came to trust Jesus, but he did. He doesn’t act like he deserves anything, he just respectfully asks. Beyond that, he is asking on behalf of one of his servants and not for himself – this is very counter to the culture of the times. Servants had no official rights or standing, yet this officer treated him like he did. As he learns about this Centurion, Jesus is so impressed that He says, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!” Luke 7:9.

This short event underscores the fundamental truth we find throughout the Bible: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6 (NLT) There is nothing tricky about this at all. This mindset is what God is looking for and eager to reward. The question is, where am I?
