This week’s reading- 1 Corinthians 3-4
Currently, there is a series of commercials where a financial investment company contrasts itself with its competitors by saying they are a trustworthy company who always puts the interest of their clients first. I don’t know about that company, but I do know that we, as followers of Jesus, are to always put His interests above our own… always!
In 1 Corinthians 4:2 (NLT), Paul says it plainly: “Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful.
The context is Paul explaining the role of church leaders. They are never to pursue their own interests but always keep in mind and practice working to represent, honor and please God. We can see this in church work, but it carries over into every follower’s life regardless of their position. We are all called to handle our talents, time, resources, and opportunities as belonging to God and therefore to be managed for His purposes and pleasure. The moment we begin to think that we are the owners of our lives, we begin to crowd God out. Jesus talked about this in Luke:
“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. 11 And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? 12 And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own? 13 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” Luke 16:10–13 (NLT)
Faithfulness to God begins with a humble mindset, that all I have is ultimately His. My role is to manage it well for Him. When I choose to live this way, I am guaranteed to have God’s attention and His blessing.
“The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ Matthew 25:23 (NLT)
